Medusa

  • With all the recent renditions of Medusa painting her as some sort of monstrous villain to be feared and as a symbol of sexuality, I wanted to portray the infamous mythology as a much more vulnerable character, someone who is as much a victim of her curse as those who look up on her. A young woman frightened and alone and suffering with the hostility of her affliction.

The image was created over the course of a few weeks of sculpting and painting the character in Z-Brush before rendering several passes out of the software. These passes were then composited in photshop with extra details added such as spittle, blood and tears and then colour corrected to create the final image.

With recent renditions of Medusa painting her as both a monstrous villain to be feared and a symbol of adultery and sexuality, I wanted to present the infamous mythos in a much more vulnerable characterisation.
